My Take

Oh, yeah. Excitement. Poor Pug. Sattler is brilliant with the graphics. They’re simple, and yet convey so much. She sure cracked me up with that sign in the hen coop: “Eat. Lay. Peck.” Yep, boring, lol.

Sattler makes good use of dog toys with which kids would already be familiar and has some fun with Chick egging on Pug, who only wants to sleep.

You’d expect Pug to lash out, but after his owner shows up with some, um, “distractions”, Pug discovers how handy it could be to have a sidekick, lol.

The Story

Young Chick can’t imagine spending his life in a boring old chicken coop, especially after reading The Adventures of Wonder Pug.

So Chick sets off to find excitement.

The Characters

Chick is quite the adventurous, er, um, chick.

Pug is the always sleeping dog…hmmm, I wonder if he’s part cat? Mr. Snuggles is the pink-beribboned cat. Pug’s owner likes to play dress-up with Pug.

The Cover and Title

The cover is a texturing of greens going from dark at the bottom to a light minty green at the top with an interest of oranges. It’s a great background for the yellow Chick in that black beret and standing a’top the black-and-white striped sweater’d brown Pug with his dashing red scarf, as he lies on his back, an ear flopping across his muzzle. It’s a vulnerable position for Pug, and Chick is willing to take advantage. The title is fun in a deep orange across the top while the author’s name is quite small in white at the bottom.

The title is who they are: Chick ‘n’ Pug.
