Shapes icon in the Inspector palette

Shapes

The Shapes palette is the fifth icon in Inspector and enables color fills, changing the stroke attributes, shadowing, creating a reflection, and affecting the opacity of the color to affect the Shapes imported from the toolbar.

Making any changes requires that the shape or image is selected—the eight bounding boxes should be visible.

  • Color Fill and Stroke, Figure 28, is the most basic example.

Shapes also allows you to affect:
  • Shadows, Figure 29
  • Line and Endpoints are additional refinements for Stroke
  • Reflections permits a particularly singular effect

Figure 29. Demonstrates the effect of Shadow with a red fill, its offset, blur, and opacity.

Metrics icon in the Inspector palette

Metrics

Metrics is the sixth icon in Inspector and is all about size and position (in pixels):

Figure 32. This Metrics example displays the relevant information about Figure 31: the name of the file, its width and height, and its position upon the page.

Figure 33. This Metrics example displays Rotate (pink arrows) while the text shows the effect of using Flip.

The top text is the original; the middle shows use of the horizontal Flip while the bottom text uses the vertical Flip.

  • Tells the name of the file
  • Current size can be changed by:
    • Grabbing one of the bounding boxes
    • Typing a new number under Width or Height
    • Clicking the up-down arrows to the right of each size box
    • Constrain proportions, when checked, allows you to change either width or height and iWeb will constrain or keep the image's proportions by automatically calculating the other measurement for you
      • When unchecked, you can change height and not have it affect width, and vice-versa
    • Original Size button lets you revert back to the original size of the image in case you make too many changes and can't remember the original measurements
  • Position dictates where on the page the image/shape is located with x representing the distance from the left margin and y the distance from the top margin
  • Rotate is fairly obvious with the degree of rotation affected in one of three ways:
    • Moving the black dot within the circle
    • Typing a new number in Angle
    • Clicking the up-down arrows to the right of Angle

Link Inspector icon in the Inspector palette

Link Inspector

The Link Inspector is the seventh icon in Inspector and creates a hyperlink for the text or image you have chosen via the two available tabs:
  • Hyperlink affects how the chosen text/image is used as a link
  • Check the Enable as a hyperlink box tells the browser that the selected image/text is to be considered a hyperlink
  • Link To provides the choice of linking to one of your pages, the page on an external website, a file located on your hard drive, or it is an email address
  • Page refers to one of your webpages
  • UNcheck the Make hyperlinks active box to make it easier for you to edit the links within your site
  • It is not necessary to check the box to make the links active after publishing

Figure 34. The Hyperlink tab in the Link Inspector tab has four choices available: Enable as a hyperlink, Link to, Page, Make hyperlinks active.

Figure 35. Format allows you to customize the Normal, Rollover, Visited, and Disabled link colors.

  • Format allows a choice of colors for the various button states for a text link
    • Normal is the active state of a link
      • A shade of blue is the color people expect to see for an active, not-yet-clicked, link
    • Rollover is the hover state of a link
      • A rollover is when the viewer's mouse hovers over the link and a color or decorative effect occurs—it aids the viewer by indicating the they actually have selected the link
      • The sky's the limit as far as color is concerned
    • Visited indicates that the viewer has already clicked this link; it's a courtesy
      • A shade of red is the color people expect to see for an active link
    • Disabled is a shortcut (that doesn't always work) to deactivate a link
      • Another courtesy to your viewer, it serves to confirm which page your viewer is on while preventing them from clicking it
        • It is so irritating to click a link and wonder if you've moved!
    • located on the right are icons for underline, Figure 37
      • Grey indicates no underline
      • Blue indicates it is underlined
    • The Use for New Links on Page button is a very handy shortcut. It lets you set the link colors once. Any future links you create will automatically take on these colors and underline attributes.
      • The shortcut only works for that page; you'll have to set it on every page
      • If you change/add a hyperlink that uses a different set of colors, you will have to reset those particular colors

  2. Poster Frame allows you to choose a still from the movie to use as its playbill or movie poster; it does not affect where the movie begins
  3. Autoplay, when checked, causes the movie to begin playing as soon as it finishes loading on the page
  4. Loop, when checked, causes the movie to play over and over
  5. Show movie controller, when checked, displays controls by which the viewer can make the movie start, stop, fast forward, rewind, pause…

Figure 36. The QuickTime window provides actions such as Start and Stop, Poster Frame, Autoplay, Loop, and Show movie controller.

Setting up your website, designing your page layout, and creating your navigation system is the next section.
