Documentation is a writing service which can involve anything from help/instruction manuals to websites to using any type of product including procedural texts on the assembly, use, or installation of products. Such documentation may be aimed at engineers, trainees, or the average user.

It may also include producing written content for brochures, websites, textbooks, guides, articles, and/or corporate to scientific reports.

Kathy Davie's particular expertise is in writing and illustrating the information simply and thoroughly enough that the end user, no matter their expertise or lack thereof, easily finds the necessary information without resorting to calls to technical support. Kathy has a gift for remembering her first time with technical products and/or tools and not forgetting how frustated new users become.

Editing

Kathy Davie has a wide range of experience in a variety of media and an excellent command of English. She is comfortable with the larger tasks of performing as a web content editor, editing the HTML or CSS code on a website, online editing, or the more prosaic paper editing with her greatest strength in copyediting through to the obsessive care needed for proofreading.

In fiction, Kathy Davie has an excellent background in a broad timeline around the Regency period in England as well as a minor in History which focused on the Medieval and Renaissance with a passion for how people lived, loved, and battled. Having been an artist for decades, Kathy is very comfortable with art and its history while her decades of interest in sewing in all areas as well as her experience in carpentry, welding, and electrical has increased her awareness of those fields. Several decades of exposure to the mining field, particularly in metallurgical extraction, has impressed more than one mining engineer.

The editing work available from KD Did IT encompasses three different task weights: proofing, copyediting, and editing.

The difference between the three involves degree and depth (click the links for more concrete examples):

  • Proofreading is the lightest weight and is concerned with the final text: examining it for formatting and typographical errors (typos)
  • Copyediting encompasses checking for spelling and grammatical errors, examining for proper word use, eliminating the use of passive voice, repairing inconsistencies, and may also include notations about text flow
  • Editing is the heavyweight and may involve more substantial changes such as eliminating passive voice, ensuring a clear flow of ideas (including layout usability), rewriting sections of text without changing the author's voice, eliminating excessive wordiness, and reorganizing the document

Everything I do involves research from combing the Internet, interviewing and interacting with subject matter experts, trying out new (or old!) software, and having a deep desire to understand how things work combined with my lateral thought processes all of which creates the ideal researcher for your project.
