Fees

The total project fee is dependent upon how much content, information, and/or graphics you supply as well as the number of people involved in the approval process; the more raw content which must be generated by KD DID IT and the more personnel involved in the approval process, the higher the cost of the project.

Writing (original content development)

I blend your need to promote your product with the end user's perspective. I empathize with a user's initial difficulties in using a product and I produce a document, which takes into account the user's probable comfort level.

Editing

My goal is to help you, the author, look professional. Considering how very permanent a publication is—yes, even the digital editions—you want to publish the very best version of your book as possible. You only have one reputation and it's worth taking the time to ensure that your book is looking its best!

Editing, Line Editing, and Copyediting-Proofreading

My primary strengths are with line editing and copyediting-proofreading. Line editing focuses on each individual sentence to ensure that it makes sense and flows well within the paragraph and from paragraph to paragraph. It ensures that dialog suits the character.

I blend copyediting and proofreading on my first read-through of a manuscript correcting errors in grammar; fixing misspellings, typos, improper punctuation, and flagging improper word usage (slang terms from the 1920s are not appropriate in Regency romances); and allowing my subconscious to find continuity and logic issues.

Formatting and mechanical issues are addressed at the same time.

The second and third read-through assesses story continuity, loose threads, and weaknesses while continuing to examine the text for punctuation and grammar problems.

The "3x" Rate or "LCP"

My basic fee for the LCP is what I refer to as the "3x" rate. It allows you to submit your manuscript on three separate occasions and gives you the chance to fix changes or challenge me on my suggestions twice. Each time you submit your manuscript, I read through the entire manuscript word by word three times at a minimum. This means I will have read your manuscript a bare minimum of nine times.

The "1x" Rate or "Starving Artist"

Then there's the "starving artist" rate, which is a one-time submission, also known as the "1x" rate. I realize that many authors are scraping by and it can be difficult to raise that kind of money. At the "1x" rate, you submit your manuscript one time and I will read the entire manuscript word by word a minimum of three times. Of course, if you choose to work with me again, as a returning client you receive a 10% discount.

Content Editing Rate

Content editing is much more intense and entails concentrating on the structure of the manuscript, the writer's style, and the story content looking for particular problems. There may be issues with weak or inconsistent characters, the writing may be bloated, the writer's style may fluctuate, the structure of the manuscript may have problems, the pacing may be erratic, dialog may be awkward or unrealistic, or there may be inconsistencies in the plot or theme of the story all of which entails a great deal more interaction between editor and author.

Due to the greater intensity, the basic fee for content editing is $35 per hour. Lucky that I'm such a fast reader...even when reading a manuscript word for word!

How a Read-Through Works

Each time you submit a manuscript, I begin by blending copyediting and proofreading on my first read-through of your manuscript. I correct errors in grammar; fix misspellings, typos, improper punctuation, and flag improper word usage (slang terms from the 1920s are not appropriate in Regency romances); and, allow my subconscious to find continuity and logic issues. Formatting and mechanical issues are addressed at the same time.

The second and third read-through of the submission assesses story continuity, loose threads, and weaknesses while continuing to examine the text for punctuation and grammar problems.

I have included samples, which visually explain content flow, editing, proofing, and content layout.

Layout for Publication

Save time by having me create your publications template with the requisite styles or I can coach you through the process of creating your own set of styles or designing your own template.

Avoid the frustrations of designing the page layout and formatting for your manuscript by utilizing my compulsion to create a professional publication.

This includes creating the "copyright page" with the necessary publication and copyright information although it does not include the cost of the ISBN or the ISBN bar code if the manuscript is intended for print.
