Second in the Chicagoland Vampire urban fantasy series based in, where else, Chicago, and featuring Merit, the Sentinel of Cadogan House.

My Take

Yes, I enjoy this series very much. It may even be a buy. Merit is such a lovely, kickass person trying so very hard to fit into her new, unwanted lifestyle. And she won’t take any guff from anyone.

The Story

It’s time. Merit is moving out of Mallory’s place and into Cadogan House. As Sentinel, it just isn’t acceptable that Merit live so far from the House, especially if/when an emergency erupts. It’s bittersweet as Merit will miss Mallory so much. She just won’t miss the trauma of walking into a room to find Catcher and Mallory…ahem…heavily engaged. The sight of Catcher’s bare ass in the kitchen the other day was…well, more than enough to make Merit decide to pack up. She’s sure she can avoid Ethan…

The worst aspect is Ethan insisting, nay, commanding her to “resume” her social ties with her parents and their ilk. A society she was more than ecstatic to evade once she went off to college. There is nothing Merit wants less than to have to spend time with her parents or the social elite of Chicago although her sister, Charlotte, doesn’t seem so bad.

Then the blackmail begins…

The pressure builds and builds until, naturally, Merit picks another fight with Ethan and finally releases her inner vamp with some rather unusual consequences.

The Characters

Nicholas Breckenridge had been Merit’s boyfriend before they each went off to university.

Union of Amalgamated Sorcerers and Spellcasters, a.k.a., U-ASS or the Order. Hey, I couldn’t resist…although it does sum up Catcher’s attitude to the Order.

The Cover

Yup, there’s Merit in her preferred work clothes leaning against a wood-paneled wall. And just in case we miss the point that this is an urban-fantasy, she’s holding her katana while the a moon gleams, clouds drifting across its brightness with wrought iron spikes lunging upward…just to keep us in the right mood.
