Book Review: Christy Reece’s Second Chance

Book Review: Christy Reece’s Second Chance

by Kathy Davie Second Chance by Christy Reece Series: Last Chance Rescue, 5 My rating: 5 of 5 stars Fifth in the Last Chance Rescue romantic suspense series revolving around the damaged psyches of the agents of LCR. The couple focus is on Cole Mathison and Keeley Fairchild in Fairview, South Carolina, the town founded by Stephen Fairchild’s great-grandfather. My TakeHoo, boy. This one is full of strife, drama, and tension. Reece does an amazing job of keeping you guessing until the end…with a lot of surprises at the end. Elizabeth is a piece of work. For all her power and money, she is so insecure and VICIOUS. She can’t even tell the difference between her grandchildren. I do love that Cole despises her and manipulates her like crazy! Reece makes me crazy…all these hints, all the possibilities, and I just knew who it had to be. And I couldn’t be more wrong. The person setting this all up is so incredibly vicious… I’m in awe of Reece being able to create a character like this. The StoryThere is someone in the town of Fairview who really, and I mean really, hates and despises Keeley Fairchild. This person will stop […]

Blake Crouch, Run

Blake Crouch, Run

Run by Blake Crouch My rating: 4 of 5 stars An incredibly horrific tale of an apocalyptic run for escape. My TakeSomeone stuck the epilogue on the front. And then I want someone explain to me why a lawyer would be in a Guard unit… Be sure to read the excerpt on the back of the book, because the final reason to run is not obvious in the book. It’s interesting to watch Jack and Dee’s marriage repair itself on this desperate journey even as their children mature from squabbling brats to a more practical support. Suddenly, his depression and her issues no longer seem that important in the light of survival. Oh, please…get a grip, Dee. Why does she expect Jack to have a plan for a situation like this?? Yeah, yeah, I get that she’s terrified…but, what a bitch! At least she’s a doctor. That medical training is incredibly useful. I did appreciate her comments about Jack’s current medical plan, that it “doesn’t cover sterilizations”. This is terrifying enough to make me consider bullet-proofing my truck! The militia camp certainly had a Lord of the Flies feel to it! Gimme a break, why would Jack be so stupid […]

Gena Showalter, On the Hunt

Gena Showalter, On the Hunt

On the Hunt by Gena Showalter Series: Collector (Sentinel Wars, 3.5)             Crystal Skull (Nightkeepers,                  a.k.a., Final Prophecy, 5.5)             Red Angel (Midnight Warriors, a.k.a.,                  Gods of Midnight, 4.5 OR 5.5???) My rating: 3 of 5 stars An anthology of four stories of supernatural hunts. The StoriesGena Showalter’s Ever Night is better than I would have expected. Rose Pascal is a Walker. Doomed to a bond with a parallel world that involuntarily activates on her eighteenth birthday sending her body to a demonic-seeming dimension. It will take a while before she realizes that appearing before Prince Vasili is actually a good thing. I actually enjoyed this even though Showalter didn’t give any reasons for Vasili’s reactions. While Showalter presented a ton of information, it wasn’t in a smooth segue. Shannon K. Butcher’s Collector finds the couple focus on Neal Etan and Viviana Rowan. Viviana has an object that might cure Torr’s paralysis and Neal is determined to acquire it. Unfortunately, Viviana is unimpressed with his need, but the bond has been noticed by the […]

Book Review: Cat Adams’ Siren Song

Book Review: Cat Adams’ Siren Song

by Kathy Davie Siren Song by Cat Adams Series: Blood Singer, 2 My rating: 5 of 5 stars Second in the Blood Singer urban fantasy series about Celia Graves, a bodyguard whose life has been turned inside out and upside down. My TakeWhoa…this is a hard crowd! Adams certainly has a unique take on how vampires are considered in her world. Celia and Dr. Scott are kidnapped and she acts in self-defense saving both of their lives and all the prosecutor has to say is that if she ever “sets so much as a toe out of line, we will prosecute”? What about the cops who ignored what was happening? What about the harassment? What a bunch of jerks! Celia has done nothing but be plotted against and attacked. Meanwhile, everyone who doesn’t know her is way too quick to blame her. Even when they know that even the police are planning to hurt her, to jam her up. Nor are they particularly inclined to help her to prevent problems for others. What is with the sirens?? They’re miffed because Celia doesn’t know their protocol. They’re angry because she doesn’t respond to their messages. So, a) who’s to blame for […]

Lisa Sabin-Wilson, WordPress for Dummies

Lisa Sabin-Wilson, WordPress for Dummies

WordPress for Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson My rating: 3 of 5 stars A self-help manual explaining the use of WordPress.com and WordPress.org. My TakeSabin-Wilson did a nice job of separating out the .com and the .org versions and she provided various lists of the best plugins, great free templates, and sites to explore for their use of various WordPress features. I was less than excited with her explanation of changing up the WordPress templates. I suspect it will become clearer as I play with the bits and pieces. Considering this is a Dummies book, I would have expected better coverage of how the PHP works and what one should avoid changing. I certainly would have appreciated learning what I should change to make it more accurate for a particular site. The CoverThe typical Dummies cover of yellow and black. I can’t get excited about the image of the laptop displaying seven positions of it closing/opening… The title is accurate…especially for me! WordPress for Dummies. View all my reviews
