Third in the Chanku erotic paranormal romance series revolving around a group of shifters whose origins are in the Himalayas. The couple focus is on Luc Stone and Tia and takes place primarily in San Francisco in 2006.

My Take

The prologue is useful for providing background on Ulrich and Tia. It’s rather funny that Ulrich keeps thinking of his little girl as a sex-free zone when she’s been indulging for a decade. She’s also been intent on Luc. And vice versa. What no one takes into consideration is that Tia is a strong woman who intends to keep her independence.

There’s more story here than usual for a Kate Douglas Chanku. I do enjoy her writing. She creates interesting characters whom I, at least, want to get to know better. Mmmm-hmmmm, sigh… *Laughing*, okay, seriously, Douglas does create some interesting scenarios both in and out of bed.

Be warned. This is multiple-partner sex and there is one scene which is rather intense.

As I am finally approaching this series chronologically instead of stumbling over the occasional story, I’m learning Douglas’ progress as a writer. As I mentioned, Douglas writes about sex — lots and lots of sex with multiple partners in all sorts of permutations. She is one of the rare writers [that I’ve encountered so far] who actually write a story interesting enough that I want to know how things turn out…*ahem, besides the sex!*…and she places an emphasis on honorable and decent characters who care for each other.

That said, Douglas is obviously still finding her way as a writer in this one. That or she was in a hurry. There have been a number of bits where I cringed and wondered where her editor was.

The Story

Ulrich is terrified. The daughter he sent away to school is returning and now he has to face the fact that he’s postponed telling Tia about her heritage. And he still can’t. Instead he appoints Luc Stone to be her protector, to become her friend and determine what, if anything, she can handle. Talk about handing over the key to the chastity belt!

Tia has been in lust for Luc since she first met him after her mother’s funeral while Luc has also wanted her. A want he found undesirable then when she was so young. Now. Now, she’s his and he’ll do whatever is necessary to ensure it.

Every man’s attention is on Tia and the threat to her. It’s this obsession that makes it possible for Ulrich’s kidnapping. Fortunately, Ulrich recently made contact with the leader of another Chanku pack based in Montana and that may be all that enables them to rescue their leader.

The Characters

Captain Ulrich Mason was a cop with the SPFD and now he is the alpha for the San Francisco pack of Chanku, wolf shifters. Tianna is the daughter he wants to keep safe from his pack. Camille is, was, his freethinking mate who thought the rules did not apply to her.

Lucien Stone is the guilty cop, an officer with the SFPD about to learn a terrifying truth. He now works for Pack Dynamics under Mason. The world believes Pack Dynamics is a detective agency while, in reality, it’s a top-secret government agency. He also has a horrifying secret to divulge to Tia. One that may lose cause him to lose her. The rest of the pack includes AJ and Mik who were prison inmates and lovers who joined on their release, Jake was a paramedic when he was younger, and Tinker was military and had served in Afghanistan.

Anton Cheval is the alpha for the Montana pack. His wife, Keisha Rialto, is Ulrich’s long lost niece. Stefan Aragat and Alexandria “Xandi” Xanet are part of his pack. Oliver is an Englishman employed by Cheval.

Shannon Murphy is Tia’s best friend and has been her lover for years.

Secretary of Homeland Security Milton Bosworth is on the presidential cabinet who was kidnapped by al Qaeda terrorists.

The Cover and Title

The cover is primarily red with black with an almost cartoon quality to the embracing couple.

Douglas doesn’t put much effort into creating titles for the individual books and this one is no exception. The Wolf Tales indicates that it’s a full-length novel while the II only means it’s the second full-length story in this series.
