The Temperate and the Intemperate

The Conference and Convention Opportunities page has information and links to upcoming or annual conferences, book fairs, conventions, and more with the idea of providing a quick glance at what’s out there for writers, especially writers who are trying to do it all and make planning your own schedule easier — and why it’s organized by month (do check the year!) instead of my usual alphabetizing.

I’d appreciate your letting me know of recurring conferences and book fairs, so we can add them here and make it easier to track dates and events.

If you believe a friend may want to know about these opportunities (or has participated in one they’d like to share news about), share this page about conferences and more with them by tweeting this.

South African Book Fair 2015

Date Where Cost
June Johannesburg, South Africa R50.00 per person
R20.00 for pensioners
Free to all persons under the age of 18 years old
The South African Book Fair has established itself as South Africa’s premier exhibition for the literary and publishing worlds to gather and trade, not to mention the literary feast for all booklovers to indulge in. Having attracted hundreds of local and global exhibitors, the South African Book Fair has become one of the Sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest Book Fair, and publishers and authors will descend on Cape Town from destinations around Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Due to the widespread popularity of the South African Book Fair (formerly known as the Cape Town Book Fiar), the Publisher’s Association of South Africa (PASA) has opted to nationalise the Fair. The 2015 South African Book Fair will take place in Johannesburg. “In line with requests from a number of key stakeholders, PASA believes that by positioning the Fair nationally, this will increase interest with current participants from a location point of view. In addition, we are targeting increased involvement with new regional stakeholders,” comments Mpuka Radinku, the Executive Director of PASA.

According to Siphiwo Mahala, Head of Books and Publishing at the Department of Arts and Culture: “The South African Book Fair is an important platform in our endeavour to develop a literate and reading society. The importance of literacy and a vibrant culture of reading cannot be overemphasised. Literacy underpins development in all sectors of society in a modern world and contributes not only to a knowledge economy, but also stimulates economic growth and job creation.”
