Twelfth in the Mageverse erotic paranormal-romance series with the vampires, the Magus and Maja of King Arthur’s court as the good guys protecting our world. This one sees the resolution of Belle Coeur and Tristan’s relationship.
My Take
It feels like Knight is losing her passion in this series. The last story, Master of Smoke was pretty lame and this one is only somewhat improved. It’s too mechanical. As though Knight is just going through the motions. Miranda, Warlock’s runaway daughter, appears with her contributions and there’s some promise for her in the future. But it’s just surface.
It could be because some of the good guys are lost, but . . . Arthur gets implicated in a nasty plot but Knight doesn’t go very far with it; it’s too easily resolved.
The Story
There is active conflict between the Mages and the Direkind. Warlock is playing up the tricks to force a war between the two in his bid for world domination. You could almost feel sorry for Dice, the motorcycle gang leader, Warlock changes and corrupts with some new magics. Almost.
These new magics make it possible to confuse both the Dire wolves and the Magi as Warlock stirs the pot with corruption.
The Cover and Title
The cover has a split personality with bare-chested and cloaked Tristan standing forthright, his sword held before him hands clasping its hilt. It’s possible that the purple flourish of fluid fabric to his right is part of his cape but the golden corner makes me wonder.
I suspect the title refers to Warlock since he seems to be a Master of Shadows hiding behind his concealing magic.
