A free short story, 1.1, in the Kate Daniels arcanepunk fantasy series revolving around a secretive woman mercenary, only this story is from Curran’s POV, as written by Gordon Andrews, the other half of Ilona Andrews.

If you’re interested, there is a chronological listing of the Kate Daniels books on my website.

My Take

This short is also published in Small Magics, an anthology of short stories and included in the Curran POV Collection.

It’s too funny, as Curran assesses his date and compares her to Kate. It’s no contest.

The funny part is that Curran is right and wrong in his assessment. He’s also trying to play it cool, but he’s just snarky enough to get a reaction from Kate and her date. It’s easy enough to tell where his feelings are at . . . which makes it even funnier.

I did like Kate’s reaction when Curran caught sight of Crest . . . with Kate. It makes me want to re-read Magic Bites, 1, all over again. Right now.

And yes, this is first person protagonist point-of-view from Curran’s perspective. It seems that he doesn’t care for mild and submissive.

The Story

Kate Daniels, dressed to the nines, walks into Fernando’s to meet the very urbane Dr Maximillian Crest.

The Characters

Kate Daniels is with the Mercenary Guild — she’s not much on following orders or hierarchy. Dr Maximillian Crest is a plastic surgeon, enamored of Kate.

Curran is the Beast Lord, a lionshifter, who leads the Pack. The gorgeous Myong, a minkwere, is Curran’s current girlfriend and incredibly submissive.

Fernando’s is a fancy restaurant where people come to be seen.

The Cover and Title

The cover is dark browns with a close-up of Curran in his lion state. The author’s name is in a light gold and crossing Curran’s muzzle. The title is at the bottom in both white and the light gold.

The title is “Fernando’s”, an exclusive restaurant in Atlanta.
