Word Confusion: Bimonthly versus Semimonthly

Posted May 21, 2020 by kddidit in Author Resources, Self-Editing, Word Confusions, Writing

I’m not sure this post on the polysemous bimonthly versus semimonthly will help a whole lot. It’s that bi-. It’s so vague.

Bimonthly is twice, but it can be twice a month or every two months. Which means that whatever is bimonthly, it could be happening twenty-four times OR six times a year.

Semimonthly is much simpler. It’s twice a month. Period.

Of course, semimonthly isn’t used all that frequently, so readers won’t necessarily get the difference. Instead, you may want to be more specific with twice a month or every two months. Another option is to use the British fortnight or fortnightly, which means a period of two weeks.

Word Confusions…

…started as my way of dealing with a professional frustration with properly spelled words that were out of context in manuscripts I was editing as well as books I was reviewing. It evolved into a sharing of information with y’all. I’m hoping you’ll share with us words that have been a bête noir for you from either end.
