A standalone story of erotic fantasies.

My Take

Hart primarily switches between Sadie’s lunches with Joe and her life with Adam. Joe’s stories point up the lack of touch and loving in Sadie’s life while Sadie reminisces about life with Adam before the accident and life now. The anger, the frustration, the failed hope.

It took quite a while before I got into this story as it was both depressing and slightly erotic. All that hope and promise cut down by a stupid accident. But Hart did a lovely job of expressing the issues that come between a man and a woman after such a tragic outcome. The fear, the guilt.

The Story

It begins with Sadie meeting Joe on a park bench, and then they meet there once a month with their bag lunches. As the months go by, they slowly work up to Joe telling Sadie stories of his sexual encounters in the past month. They never touch. They never kiss. But they build a relationship all the same. Tempting and tempted. Sadie always remembers her husband, Adam, and draws back within the safety of her psychologist role in responding to Joe.

It’s always safe for Sadie as Joe never sees any of the women again. Once is always enough. Until he meets Priscilla whom he sees again and again. Until Sadie walks toward the park bench and sees Joe sitting there. With Priscilla.

The Characters

Dr. Sadie Danning is a psychologist with a passion for helping people. Adam Danning, Sadie’s husband, is an acclaimed poet with a passion for all things and together they are wildly in love with all that it implies. A love that suffers when Adam is in a car accident and emerges as a quadriplegic.

Joe Wilder is a chance encounter on a park bench during lunch hour. A man to whom Sadie is drawn as they meet each month. Each story, each month, we learn more about the man. His likes, his dislikes. His profession. His name, his age. His favorite color and favorite foods.

The patient we most encounter is Elle who is trying to grasp that she does indeed deserve to be loved, that marriage is good.

The Cover and Title

The cover is rather perfect with a woman’s naked thighs topped by a black, lace-edged negligee. His hand beginning to slip between her thighs, as her hand tentatively brushes against his wrist, representing all the women he’s encountered. The title also is rather perfect for indeed Sadie is Broken.
