Nineteenth in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter erotic urban fantasy series revolving around Anita Blake, vampire hunter, necromancer, succubus, and human servant to Jean-Claude, Master of the City of St. Louis. Although, I suspect JC would say he’s not really sure who the master is in their relationship.
My Take
I waited so long for this one to come out and it was too bloody short. What the h#&&.
Oh my god! I don’t believe it! Richard has done another of his about-faces where he’s going to be supportive of the triumvirate he is a part of with Anita and JC. It’s gotta fall apart soon. Richard is never this helpful!! At least, not for this long!
Anita’s relationship with the tigers is paying off big time. Very few shifters outside the tiger clan have ever been able to make it past the third month of a pregnancy, and the tigers are teaching Anita’s people how to deal. Even Richard is helping out. Seems Richard has been making progress with his therapist since Anita took back her anger in Blood Noir, 16.
Revelations about why Asher is never going to be a Master of a city. I can see why but I don’t see why it’s such a bad thing. Nicky does a bit of a setup about Valentina; I’m not sure if Hamilton is prepping us for a future issue or her disposal. And Anita actually gets a compliment from a fellow Marshal who sought her out for her expertise! Even Chang Bibi is begging for Anita’s help (Skin Trade, 17)! Will wonders never cease…!
Even with the threats, life is rich and full in St. Louis. Even Richard acknowledges that Jean-Claude is the best thing that ever hit the city.
The Story
A ballet recital?! Who’d’a thunk the vampires and shifters would turn out en masse for little Matthew’s first ballet recital? Well, okay, to be fair, Jason and Nathaniel have donated their time and efforts to partner the graduating girl students for their particular numbers in the recital but still…
Naturally, nothing can stay good and Anita and Jean-Claude discover that Narcissus is plotting a coup against them when Richard shows up offering to be a good boy. Well, good is a relative term. It seems Richard is embracing his inner BDSM.
Just in time, too, as Asher is threatening to take his werehyenas and leave St. Louis unless he starts getting some. And Richard is the icing on the cake for Asher.
Not to be repetitive or anything, but nothing can stay good. At the literal climax of the night, Belle Morte and Padma, Master of Beasts appear, metaphysically, and go on the attack. Seems Marmee Noir didn’t die in that explosion after all…
The Characters
Oooh, new characters appear when Jake (The Harlequin) shows up with a slew of golden tigers in tow. He’s pinning his hopes on Anita becoming the new Master of Tigers and taking Marmee Noir down.
The Cover and Title
It’s definitely a theme with the metallic cover and a simple symbol. The distressed silver metallic background with a fuzzed-out Bullet referring to Anita’s reaction to Cookie Monster. Guess you can’t always teach an old lion new tricks… I am kinda surprised that it wasn’t a lip print though, after all, “all the big boys kiss ‘Nita”.
