My Take I enjoyed this. Of course, it does combine archeology with suspense, so I am a bit prejudiced. I did enjoy the explanation of the Maya religion and the slightly more in-depth information about the importance of blood sacrifice. An interesting mix of historical significance and the perversions modern man will twist it. As an artist, I appreciated the description of certain of the artifacts and how they were made and displayed. Most of the story is the romance between Lina and Hunter as well as their “escape” into Mexico, additional interest via Jase and Hunter’s tracking down clues about the stolen artifacts, and a short, dramatic visit with Lina’s family. This was a new one: The “nine-millimeter warrant”. Lina really only has her grandmother for support in the family. Her parents are cold and self-absorbed and her cousin […]

It’s been a year since events in One Salt Sea. My Take I just love this series and this story is no exception. If only because Toby finally gets just why it is that Tybalt keeps coming to her rescue! McGuire is colorful and describes people, scenes, and battles beautifully. She does an incredible job of blending the supernatural wonders of the fae with the down home qualities of Toby and overlaying it all with very human values. Whew…it’s betrayals galore against a sea of friendship and honor. More heart-stopping action that you can imagine and a whirlwind tour of many fae knowes, Courts, and Faerie. While it’s wonderful that Toby insists upon protecting everyone, she does […]

Cheyenne Williams’ Haunted Week

Cheyenne Williams’ Haunted Week

Over at This Girl Reads, Cheyenne Williams has come up with an intriguing challenge to celebrate Halloween. Challenging enough that I want to see if I can follow her rules. Yep, she does not require that anyone follow the rules, but I like her ideas enough that I plan on…well, adhering to the idea of ’em! In the week leading up to Halloween, I’m supposed to post something about books daily, beginning October 24th and ending on the 31st. It’ll be fun to see what I come up with…for me at least! Y’all’ll just hafta suffer. Day 1: Ghosts of Books Half-Read Five books I began but never finished. The words that are watching me from the corner of the room, waiting, lingering in the doorway, yearning to be set free. Day 2: Bats in your Book Pages Five things in books that drive me round the bend, the idiotic antics, the issues that are so wacko-nutso that I am knocked senseless. Day 3: Skeletons on My Bookshelf Five books that I have owned forever but have never gotten around to reading. Those volumes that lurk upon my shelves, squinting down at me with their beady little words, shaming my […]

Book Review: Carol Marinelli’s Wanted: Mistress and Mother

Book Review: Carol Marinelli’s Wanted: Mistress and Mother

I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Wanted: Mistress and Motherin Paperback edition on March 1, 2007 and has 186 pages.Explore it on Goodreads or Amazon A contemporary Harlequin Australian romance. My Take I liked this one for its twist on how Matilda and Dante meet. She’s a landscape designer who has created a lovely rooftop garden for the hospital. An expense that Dante sees as wasteful. There are some blips that detract from the story. Dante blows hot and cold, but there’s an abruptness in this that doesn’t feel right. Then there’s Matilda’s vacillations. Oh, brother. Why do we always have to endure the heroine who can’t stick to her guns? He keeps telling her that there can be no relationship, and then she wimps around because the sex is so great and then he turns cold. Well, duh… The only feelings guys generally have about sex is the joy of getting off. They don’t need the romantic aspect as much as women do. No, I don’t object to her falling for him, I simply object to her expecting […]
