Ah’ve bin gittin’ all het up about writers using tee shirt and t-shirt when I “know” it’s supposed to be T-shirt, so I figgered it was time for a Word Confusion. Only I hadn’t expected to encounter ts, Ts, or tee when I decided to explore T-shirts.

And, while most dictionaries recommend T-shirt — the form most common in edited writing throughout the English-speaking world — t-shirt is gaining ground, and both tee-shirt and tee shirt have some adherents. Not one of them is considered incorrect, so while T-shirt might be the safer [and my preference *grin*] choice, the others aren’t wrong.

As for the ts and Ts, they can be interchangeable in some cases, but not all. So pay attention, and even more importantly, be consistent in your usage.

Word Confusions . . .

. . . started as my way of dealing with a professional frustration with properly spelled words that were out of context in manuscripts I was editing as well as books I was reviewing. It evolved into a sharing of information with y’all. I’m hoping you’ll share with us words that have been a bête noire for you from either end.
