My Take

Wouldn’t parents love to have this option!? It’s a case of a teenager knowing everything, only to find that everything has a price.

As outsiders and with Jane, we can stand back and laugh at Shiloh’s attempts to thwart her parents, although I suspect a number of parents will groan. And it’s Jane’s first person protagonist point-of-view that allows us this chuckle, as it’s all from her perspective.

It’s a tale that’s all about character — the typical family issues with teens and the none-too-experienced ones with the skills of a witch and the power of a vampire.

If this had been a long story, I’d’ve said the story was slow to move along, as it is, with nine pages, it moves along well. As short as it is Hunter has done a nice job of filling us in on quite a bit of background without it being an info dump…yay!

The Story

For once Shiloh is in the power seat after years of being told what to do. Like any teenager, she “knows” she can control herself…only to find out quite differently.

The Characters

Jane Yellowrock is a Cherokee skinwalker who can change into any beast she chooses and the vampire Enforcer in New Orleans. Yellowrock Security, Inc. is her security business along with her partners which include Alex Younger, a computer genius. Beast is Jane’s other half, her panther side.

Shiloh Everhart Stone is the runaway niece Molly and her sisters thought they had lost. A witch, she is also a new vampire. Molly Everhart Trueblood, one of Shiloh’s aunts, is an earth witch who is married to Big Evan Trueblood, an air sorcerer. Angie Baby is their daughter with an enormous range of witchy power, she shouldn’t have.

Leo Pellissier is the vampire Master of the City of New Orleans and Jane’s boss. The Vampira Carta and its codicils are the legal papers by which all Mithran vamps lived and died.

The Charlotte Coven accepts Shiloh as a student.

The Damours were witch-vampires looking for witch-children to use in black-magic rites.

The Title

The title is the heavy hand brought to bear when “Shiloh and the Brick” meet.
