A free short story, 2.9 in the Soulwood urban fantasy series set near Knoxville, revolving around Nell Ingram, a woman with some interesting abilities. The couple focus is on Nell Ingram and Occam. If you’re interested, there is a chronological listing of the Soulwood books on my website.

My Take

This was so not what I was expecting. Sure, Nell does go shopping, but it’s not your typical Black Friday shopping. Nor is it the kind of action I expected from a Soulwood novel. It is however the kind of action I see as a Nell kind of move. Oh, to be fair, I think any of the members of Unit 18 would react the same way.

Hunter reminds us of Nell’s fear of dating then pulls in the narrow objections of Nell’s former church, God’s Cloud of Glory, just to set up the background. Then Nell and Occam go in for the rescue, and it’s all through first person protagonist point-of-view from Nell’s perspective.

Now imagine what Nell is likely to do afterwards…*grin* Sure wish I could be there.

The Story

There are too many “accidents” at Walmart, and when one victim claims she smelled magic, PsyLED is called in.

The Characters

PsyLED is…
…the Psychometry Law Enforcement Division of Homeland Security that investigates supernatural incidents. Unit 18 is the team that is based in the Knoxville area.

Nell Ingram is a newbie agent with Unit 18. Occam, another agent, is a wereleopard very interested in Nell. T. Laine is the unit’s witch.

Rebecca is a young girl shopping at Walmart.

The Title

The title tells it like it is, the battleground of ” Black Friday Shopping with Nell and Occam”.
