Book Review: Craig Johnson’s “Land of the Blind”

"Land of the Blind"

by

Craig Johnson

It is part of the Walt Longmire series and is a mystery in a PDF edition that was published by the author on 2015 and has 9 pages.

Other books in this series include [books_series]

Other books by this author which I have reviewed include The Cold Dish, Death Without Company, Kindness Goes Unpunished, Another Man's Moccasins, Christmas in Absaroka County, Dark Horse, Junkyard Dogs, Hell is Empty, As the Crow Flies, Spirit of Steamboat, A Serpent's Tooth, Any Other Name, Wait For Signs, Dry Bones, The Highwayman, "Eleven/Twenty-Nine", An Obvious Fact, The Western Star, Depth of Winter, Land of Wolves, The Percentages"

I’m guessing this short story is 11.6 in the Walt Longmire mystery series — it was the Christmas short story in 2015 and revolves around the sheriff’s department in Absaroka County in Wyoming.

It came from Craig Johnson’s newsletter, and if you want to read future Longmire shorts, sign up for a subscription.

My Take

While Johnson is using first person protagonist point-of-view from Walt’s perspective, “Land of the Blind” is all about Double Tough.

It’s a case of crazy drug addict and a clever knowledge of the Bible. I gotta say I was tense from the get-go until Double Tough was just about through his “message”, lol. Oh man, it was so perfect, lolololol.

Getting back to a more sober note, it is scary what a policeman goes through to keep us safe.

The Story

It’s Christmas Eve and Walt Longmire, sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming, is on his way to a hostage situation.  A crazy druggie wearing only underpants has burst into a church and is pointing a gun at a woman’s head, mumbling about God demanding a sacrifice.

The Characters

Walt Longmire, sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyoming, is one heckuva good guy.

His deputy, “Double Tough“, a former oil worker who turned cop, one who was injured in the line of duty, is another one ( Death Without Company, 2).

Jim Persil is the new sheriff from over in Sheridan County.

Daniela Breese is a hostage.

Sam Erlanger is a recent parolee with a substance abuse problem

The Title

The title is about sacrifice and an offensive eye in the “Land of the Blind”.
