Word Confusion: Snuggly versus Snugly

I was feeling quite smug when I questioned the “. . . deep chestnut hair peeking out from the edges of the hat’s border that snuggly hugged the man’s head.”

While I did learn that snuggly is a non-recognized spelling alternative for snugly, it is an adjective (which describes nouns and pronouns). If you want to describe a verb . . .*cough, cough* . . . hugged, ya gotta go with the adverb . . . snugly.

Otherwise, I’m’a thinkin’ the man is wearing a cuddly hat that loves the man very much . . .

Keep it in mind, snuggly is an adjective while snugly is an adverb. Yep, you simply cannot trust those -lys.

Word Confusions . . .

. . . started as my way of dealing with a professional frustration with properly spelled words that were out of context in manuscripts I was editing as well as books I was reviewing. It evolved into a sharing of information with y’all. I’m hoping you’ll share with us words that have been a bête noire for you from either end.
