A free short story, 4.1 in the Hidden Legacy magical realism fantasy series, revolving around Catalina Baylor and Alessandro Sagredo in an alternative Houston, Texas.

My Take

It’s after Catalina and Runa have viewed the burned-out husks of Runa’s mother and sister and Alessandro has leapt out the window in Sapphire Flames and Sergeant Munoz is interrogating Catalina about the death of the assistant medical examiner.

Using first person protagonist point-of-view from Catalina’s perspective, we get a quick look at Catalina’s frustration with Sergeant Munoz being a jerk.

There’s the mention of Runa and why she’s with Catalina, but other than that . . . it’s not much.

It’s not really worth bothering with.

The Story

The cameras caught an assassin murdering an obstructive assistant medical examiner with Catalina as a witness. Now Sergeant Munoz intends to overwhelm her with his repetitive questions and his attempts to appear ignorant.

The Characters

Catalina Baylor is a Prime Siren and now the head of House Baylor. Nevada Baylor is her older sister now married to Connor Rogan. Sabrian Turner is their House lawyer.

Runa Etterson, a Prime Venenata (poison combat mage) and Catalina’s friend, is now the head of House Etterson.

House Response Unit of Houston PD is . . .
. . . tasked with dealing with Houses. House Baylor is one of the Houses to which Sergeant Munoz is assigned. And yeah, he’s a jerk.

The Cover and Title

The cover uses an image from the Ilona Andrews website, a close-up of a sword hilt — I’m guessing it represents Alessandro. I used white for all the text from the title at the top to the info on the book in which it takes place and the series info. The author’s name is at the bottom.

The title is kind of vague, “Sgt Munoz Had to Go”, and could refer to his being a jerk and with Catalina needing to get Runa out of the line of fire.
