Other books by this author which I have reviewed include Desire Unchained, Pleasure Unbound, Passion Unleashed, Ecstasy Unveiled, Sin Undone, Eternal Rider, Immortal Rider, Lethal Rider, Supernatural, Rogue Rider, Bound by Night, Revenant, Snowbound, "Bond of Destiny", "Z", "Azagoth", "Revenant's Epilogue", "Hades", "Razr", "Hawkyn", "Cipher", Reaper, Bond of Passion, Legacy of Temptation

Fifth in the Lords of Deliverance (LoD) paranormal romance fantasy series and tenth in the overall Demonica series. The LoD revolves around the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and their friends. The couple focus is on Reaver and Harvester.

It could be worth rereading the Lords of Deliverance just to see all the points Harvester makes about where she did and did not perform evil to retain her cover.

My Take

It starts really well. Lots of drama, tension, and violence. It’s a level it maintains fairly consistently throughout until Ione throws in that twist at the end. Never saw that one coming, although it does make sense, and Ione ties it right up. My only problems with it are that after all the turmoil of the beginning and middle, the end was too quick and easy. It felt like two separate stories and didn’t pull me in. It was also very annoying how very irritating Harvester is! Then for all the melodrama of it, it’s surprisingly surface.

I would like to know where Thanatos’ vampire servants came from and why he trusts them after events in Lethal Rider, LoD 3, Demonica 8.

Even angels have politics, greed, and power-mad schemes, and it’s disgusting that they only worry about the demons when Heaven is threatened. They do not care about humanity. Bunch of selfish scumsuckers…!

We learn so much of Harvester and Reaver’s history, and it’s one heck of a way to resolve relationship issues as you battle your way through demons and demonbeasts through Hell…

And Ione is merrily creating yet more problems for future installments. Poor Tavin.

The Story

Dumbstruck to learn the truth about Harvester and what she sacrificed to save humanity and Yenrieth’s children, Reaver is determined to pay her back for it. He must rescue her from her father’s torturers, even if it means his death.

Worse is Gethel’s reappearance. Pregnant with Lucifer by Satan, the babe will be fed with Satan’s daughter’s blood to make him even stronger with powers exclusive, once, to Heavenly angels.

The Characters

Verrine/Harvester is a beautiful, giving angel who chose to fall thousands of years ago with permission. She may hate Yenrieth, but she could never condemn his children. As Harvester, she was the Sheoulic Watcher of the Horsemen, and she is pure evil, the result of all those years of wallowing in the evil of her father’s blood, but still Heaven’s spy, pretending to work against Heaven’s Watchers: Shiresta, Barabus, Gethel, and Reaver.

Yenrieth/Reaver. His Yenrieth persona lost his memories and fell as Reaver.

Lilith, the succubus, became pregnant with the Four Horsemen: Reseph, Ares, Limos, and Thanatos.

The Four Horsemen
Thanatos/Death is married to Regan (Lethal Rider, LoD 3, Demonica 8). Cujo, a hellhound, is one of baby Logan‘s babysitters. The pregnant Limos/Famine is married to Arik (Immortal Rider, LoD 2, Demonica 7). Reseph/Pestilence has married Jillian (Rogue Rider, LoD 4, Demonica 9). Ares/War married Cara (Eternal Rider, LoD 1, Demonica 6).

The Horsemen’s current Watchers are the Sheoulic Revenant, who would prefer to not be noticed by Satan, and the Heavenly Lorelia, eager to prove herself.

The archangels include Raphael, Uriel, Michael, Gabriel, and Metatron.

Underworld General Hospital
Eidolon is the head doctor and a Seminus demon married to Tayla (Pleasure Unbound, Demonica 1). Wraith is his brother and a vampire married to Serena (Passion Unleashed, Demonica, 3). A False Angel, Blaspheme helps run the place. Forge. Gem is Tayla’s twin sister (Ecstasy Unveiled, Demonica, 4). Idess. Sin is Eidolon and Wraith’s Seminus demon sister married to Conall (Sin Undone, Demonica, 5); she once ran an assassin den with Tavin as one of her demon assassins, another Seminus demon.

Together with Matt, a werewolf assassin, and Calder, the third demon Reaver recruits, they’ll help Reaver enter Hell.

Satan is Harvester’s father and isn’t done with torturing his daughter. Gethel was the Heavenly Watcher of the Horsemen until she Fell, now she’s pregnant with Lucifer. Knell and Caim are fallen angels. The Orphmage Gormesh seems to be Satan’s witch. Slag is a Nightlash demon, a stupid one.

Radiant angels, a.k.a., Shadow Angels, are a class of angel that has not been seen for centuries and may pass through Heaven and Hell. Darkmen are angel assassins. Enforcers enforce the rules among angels. A Fallen angel has lost his wings and is doomed to wander the Earth. A True Fallen has lost his wings and chosen to go to Hell. Harrowgates are a way for demons to travel great distances and planes of existence. Boregates are similar but you can’t control where they go or they can only go back and forth (like elevators).

The Cover and Title

The cover is a blend of blacks and reds with a metallic sheen shot from the ground at a low angle, looking up Reaver’s naked, well-muscled torso. His right arm is thrown back along with one wing.

The title is who this story is about, Reaver, for it is his life and thoughts we learn.
