A free short story in the Kate Daniels arcanepunk fantasy series revolving around an apocalyptic world. The focus is on Roman, a black volhv.

If you’re interested, there is a chronological listing of the Kate Daniels books on my website.

My Take

This is a shortie that could fit anywhere in the Kate Daniels series, and it gives us a peek into Roman’s world . . . when Kate’s not around.

It could also be a noise in anyone’s night with the woman worried about that strange sound. It’s Roman’s perspective from third person protagonist point-of-view with Roman being anyman who feels the pressure to get up and investigate, only to find his religious life has interfered with his personal one.

It certainly isn’t easy being volhv, what with the summonings and dreams.

Nor does it help that ordinary people subconsciously interpret Roman’s explanation of “dark god” as “evil”.

There’s some action, but mostly a series of thoughts as Roman goes through the motions of his life.

The Story

Roman’s gotten lucky. A weekend off, a woman in his bed . . . and then it all goes wrong.

The Characters

Roman is the black priest, a volhv, for Chernobog. Layla has been enticed into bed with what she thought was a pickup line.

Chernobog seems to have four faces, going from not so bad to worst: The Hunter, the Warrior, the Old Man, and the Darkness.

An anchutka is a small evil critter, a subset of what pagan Slavs call nechist — the unclean force.

The Title

The title is true, for we are getting “ A Bit More of Roman” and his life.
