This free short story from Nalini Singh’s newsletter falls in at 6.5 in the Guild Hunter paranormal romance series and revolving around angels, hunters, and vampires. The focus is on Sara, Deacon, and their daughter, Zoë. (Their story is in “Angel’s Judgment“, 0.5.)

Singh states that these free shorts are a peek into the everyday lives of her characters. Some of her shorts are available on her website while others are only available in her newsletter. I suggest signing up! And if you’re interested, there is a chronological listing of the Guild Hunter books on my website.

My Take

It’s not a bad idea to explore your characters, flesh them out in a short story, and intrigue your readers with these “behind-the-scenes” tales.

This is so sweet with a contented family, enjoying their daughter, worrying over what Zoë will want to do with her life. I love that Deacon is so patient with his daughter’s wanting to emulate her daddy. I love even more that both her parents praise her battered piece of wood, lol.

I do adore Deacon. He’s such a hunk! And Zoë is such a sweetheart. I love her precociousness and that last scene with Slayer, lol, too sweet for words.

The Story

A peaceful morning off from the Guild as Sara enjoys the antics of her husband and daughter.

The Characters

Sara is the Guild Hunter director. Deacon is her husband and a much-in-demand weapons craftsman. Zoë Elena is their daughter (she’s in nursery school). Slayer is their dog.

Abel is Sara’s deputy.

The Title

The title is the reason for the story, our visit to “Zoë’s Workshop”.
